Welcome

Hello! Thanks for stopping by my new website. This is a great month for me! I celebrated my birthday at the AQS Quiltweek in Paducah (spring Paducah show) by winning Best of Show!!! It is such an honor and I am so humbled when I see all the amazing quilts that are entered in that show every year. Over 400 quilts are displayed (many more enter) and to have my quilt, Turkish Treasures, rise to the top is amazing. I plan to share more about that quilt in future posts.

Lots of people wanted to know what I am working on now and I haven’t really started a new big quilt. Some ideas are floating around but haven’t been born yet. I’m finishing up some small quilts I had going and am working on ideas for the upcoming quilt retreat.

My sister, Sue Nickels, and I will be hosting our fifth annual quilt retreat this September and we are gathering some examples of the topic to share with the retreaters. You can find out more about this by clicking Holly Girls Quilt Retreats. Or visit my sister’s site “Sue-Nickles.com” and click on Fall Retreats in the top menu.

Another thing I was asked about during the show was how long it took me to make the quilt.

Luna and Lilly provide encouragement.

I worked on it for about two years. It is all machine appliqued and machine quilted and I do everything myself on my home sewing machine.

I sew on a BERNINA 880 (also have a B830, B1090 and a sweet little B240). I love the B880 for many reasons but besides the extended arm, jumbo bobbin, and great lighting is the ability to design and create my own decorative stitches! I love using the decorative stitches to embellish the background fabric before placing the applique pieces. Sometimes there isn’t exactly the stitch I want so I can design the perfect stitch! I have been a Bernina Ambassador for many years and am happy to share my love of their products. Here is a link to Bernina’s site, and a link to Bernina’s projects site WeAllSew. Under the Projects tab are quilt-alongs and sew-alongs.

The last thing I want to talk about today are the two products I have to sell.

I created a coloring/design book with AQS Publishing and they are still available. It is called “A Miniature World” and the drawings came from many of my quilts that were inspired by my travels around the world. You can color in the pages or use them to create your own little quilts.

The other fun product is a 100% silk scarf I designed called “Turkish Delight”. I worked with Linda Teufil of Dragonthreads Publishing, creating the design based on my Turkish Treasures quilt. So, if you like my quilt, you can have a little piece of it to wear around your neck!
They also make great gifts. 🙂
